Handheld Communication Interfaces
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Over the years, it has been design education’s purpose to focus on developing the skills necessary to design and develop the physical form of objects. The profession is largely focused on the creation of form, with an understanding that form has the power to evoke interaction. With the growing complexity and increased use of ‘responsive’ threedimensional products such as cellular phones, PDAs, and digital cameras, designers must shift their focus from design as simply a form-giving process, to design as a process of enabling interaction [1]. The way we use a product is as important as what that product can do, or what it looks like, thus the issue of what an object means or causes one to do with it has moved to the foreground.

MESH: Supporting Mobile Multi-modal Interfaces
Handheld devices possess limited input and output functionality when compared with desktop computers. However, many mobile interfaces are simply adaptations of desktop GUIs, and not designed specifically with this reduced capacity for communication in mind. Multi-modal interfaces may serve to redress this discrepancy. In particular we suggest that input in the form of motion and output in the f...
متن کاملUntethered Interaction for Immersive Virtual Environments through Handheld Devices
This paper presents the results and the current status of our research project focusing on the design and implementation of interfaces for interaction with Immersive Virtual Environments through handheld devices. The use of this kind of devices, combined with wireless networking, improves the usability of standard VR. This could be particularly useful in application fields (i.e. Virtual Heritag...
متن کاملInvestigating the Relationship Between Battery Life and User Acceptance of Dynamic, Energy-Aware Interfaces on Handhelds
In a 24 x 7 mobile world experiencing a proliferation of handheld devices, battery life can be a limiting factor. In particular, handheld displays consume substantial battery power. One strategy to potentially reduce display battery consumption and support a positive user experience is to adopt emerging display technologies (e.g., OLEDs) that support energy-aware interfaces. The research report...
متن کاملEvent-Based Interaction for Rescue and Emergency Applications in Mobile and Disruptive Environments
Rescue operations may occur in environments where there is no communication infrastructure or where the infrastructure has been damaged by the incident itself. In addition to, or as a replacement to radio and telephones, handheld PDA-like devices can be used at the rescue site for communication. Such devices run applications and can spontaneously form a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) using their...
متن کاملDesigning for shareable interfaces in the wild
In this paper, we explore the use of a projection-based handheld device to facilitate in-clinic doctor-patient communication. We present the user-centered design process used to understand the workflow of medical professionals and to identify challenges they currently face in communicating information to patients. Based on the lessons learned, we developed AnatOnMe, a prototype projectionbased ...
متن کاملHandheld AR for Collaborative Edutainment
Handheld Augmented Reality (AR) is expected to provide ergonomic, intuitive user interfaces for untrained users. Yet no comparative study has evaluated these assumptions against more traditional user interfaces for an education task. In this paper we compare the suitability of a handheld AR arts-history learning game against more traditional variants. We present results from a user study that d...
